Film Recipes: Color Cards for Android · updated September 28, 2026
Something not working, or a question this page doesn't answer? Email trunghieu4121993@gmail.com. Tell us your phone model, your Android version and the app version (Settings → About → Version). We read every message.
The basics
The Recipes tab holds the sixteen built-in recipes; Mine holds the ones you saved or added. Every card renders on the same preview photo: a sample photo to begin with, or tap Pick a photo to use one of yours. Open a card to see its settings, and press and hold the photo to see it without the recipe.
Change any setting and tap Save as my recipe to keep it in Mine, with a name and, if you like, your own name as its author. Please leave camera and film brand names out of recipe names. The free version keeps five recipes of your own; Pro keeps as many as you like.
Adding a recipe
Tap + (Add a recipe) at the top of the library. There are four ways in:
- Scan a QR code on someone's recipe card, on their screen or printed. The scanner is Google's own, in Google Play services, so the app never asks for your camera.
- Open a recipe link (
https://filmode-recipes.web.app/r#1.…) on your phone. Android opens it straight in the app. If it opens in the browser instead, tap Open in Film Recipes on that page. - Paste a link, or settings written out as text, into Paste a recipe and tap Read recipe.
- Share text to Film Recipes from another app, for example a chat message or a blog post, with Android's share sheet.
The recipe opens on your preview photo. Nothing is saved until you tap Save as my recipe.
"This recipe uses a base tone the app doesn't have"
Recipes written for a camera usually name that camera's own colour profile, and recipes built on someone's own LUT carry no base tone at all. The app keeps every other setting it could read and asks you to pick one of its twelve base tones. Pick the closest one and save.
"That doesn't look like a recipe"
The app needs at least two settings it recognises, or a complete recipe link. Check that the text came through whole; if it came from a picture of a card, scan the card's QR code instead.
"Made with a newer version of Film Recipes"
The recipe uses something your version of the app doesn't know yet. Update Film Recipes from Google Play and try again.
The text format
Copy as text and Share as text write a recipe like this, one setting per line, always in English so that it reads back on any phone:
Saigon Noon by Minh Base tone: Amber Grain: Weak, Small Tone depth: Strong Blue depth: Weak WB: Daylight, R+2 B-3 DR: 400 Highlight: -1 Shadow: +1 Color: +2 Sharpness: -1 Clarity: 0 Exposure: +1/3 https://filmode-recipes.web.app/r#1.…
The first line is the name and by is the optional author. When a link is present, the app reads the whole recipe from the link and ignores the lines above it. Without a link it reads the lines, and it also understands the way recipe blogs and forums usually write camera settings: longer labels such as White Balance, Dynamic Range, Highlight Tone or Exposure Compensation, shifts written as +2 Red & -4 Blue, DR400 on its own line, and half steps such as +1.5. Settings the app does not have, such as noise reduction, are skipped.
| Setting | Values |
|---|---|
| Base tone | One of the twelve base tones |
| Grain | Off, Weak or Strong; Small or Large |
| Tone depth, Blue depth | Off, Weak or Strong |
| WB | Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Shade, Tungsten, Fluorescent, or a temperature from 2500K to 10000K; then a red and a blue shift from -9 to +9 |
| DR | 100, 200 or 400 |
| Highlight, Shadow | -2 to +4, in half steps |
| Color, Sharpness | -4 to +4 |
| Clarity | -5 to +5 |
| Exposure | -2 to +2, in thirds of a stop (+1/3, -1 2/3) |
| Vignette, Halation | Off, Weak or Strong (written only when on) |
Names and authors are up to 40 characters. A value outside its range is brought back to the nearest end.
Base tones
The base tone is the colour foundation a recipe builds on. There are twelve, all our own: Clear (neutral), Vivid (punchy), Soft, Harbor (muted), Amber (warm), Street (cool), Push (hard), Pastel, Bleach, Lagoon (teal), and two in black and white, Ink and Tea. A .cube file you import becomes a base tone of your own (see .cube files).
Applying a recipe to photos
Open a recipe and tap Apply to photos, then choose photos with Android's photo picker: up to 5 at a time, or 100 with Pro. Each photo is made at full resolution on your phone and saved as a new JPEG in Pictures / Film Recipes, which your gallery shows as an album. Files are named after the recipe, for example Saigon_Noon_20260928_101500_001.jpg. On Android 8 and 9 the app asks once for storage access before the first save.
- Your originals are never changed.
- The new photo keeps the original's capture date and time, so it sorts next to it in your gallery. Nothing else is copied from the original's metadata: no GPS location, no camera serial numbers.
- You can go back while a batch runs; the photos keep saving. Cancelling stops after the current photo and keeps the ones already saved.
- Very large photos need a lot of memory. If one fails, the others still save and the app tells you how many couldn't be made.
Recipe cards and sharing
Tap Card on a recipe to make its card: the recipe on your preview photo, its settings, and a QR code that carries the whole recipe. From there you can Save the card to Pictures / Film Recipes, Share card as an image, Copy the recipe as text with its link, or share it as Text. There is no watermark.
A QR code, a link and the text all carry the same thing: the settings, the name and the author you typed. No photo, no location, nothing about your phone. A recipe link opened in a browser shows the card on this website, read in the browser; the recipe after the # is never sent to our server.
Your preview photo appears on the card, so if you share cards, pick a photo you are happy to show. On a sample photo the card carries that photo's credit line.
.cube files
Import (free): in Add a recipe, tap Import a .cube file and pick a 3D LUT (LUT_3D_SIZE from 2 to 256; 1D LUTs aren't supported). It becomes a base tone called "My LUT" under My LUTs, and recipes can build on it like any other base tone. It stays on your phone. Deleting it makes recipes built on it ask for another base tone. A recipe built on your own LUT can still be shared, but the LUT doesn't travel with it: whoever adds it picks a base tone of their own.
Export (Pro): on a recipe, open the menu and tap Export as .cube. The app makes a 64×64×64 .cube of the recipe's colour and opens the share sheet, so you can save it to your files or send it to a computer. It works in most video and photo editors. Grain, sharpness, clarity, vignette and halation depend on the picture's detail rather than its colour, so a LUT can't hold them and they are left out.
Pro, restore, cancel and refunds
Film Recipes Pro adds the eight Pro recipes, unlimited recipes of your own, 100 photos per batch and .cube export. It is sold as a yearly or monthly subscription, or once for good (lifetime). Prices are shown in the app, in your currency, straight from Google Play. You can preview every Pro recipe and read all its settings before you buy.
Restore a purchase on a new phone
Sign in to Google Play with the account that bought Pro, open Film Recipes, then Settings → Restore purchases (or Restore at the bottom of the Pro screen). The app also checks with Google Play every time it opens. There is no Film Recipes account: your purchase lives with your Google account.
Cancel a subscription
In the Google Play app, tap your profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Film Recipes → Cancel subscription, or tap Manage subscription in the app's Settings. Uninstalling the app does not cancel it. After cancelling, Pro stays on until the end of the period you paid for. Cancel at least a day before renewal to avoid the next charge.
Ask for a refund
Refunds are handled by Google Play: see Google Play's help on refunds, or open your order under Payments & subscriptions → Budget & history. If Google declines and you believe you are owed one, email us with your order ID (it starts with GPA.) and we will look at it.
Redeem a promo code
Tap Redeem code at the bottom of the Pro screen, or open the Google Play app → profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Redeem code. Pro turns on when Google Play confirms it; if it doesn't show straight away, tap Restore purchases.
"Payment pending"
Some payment methods take a while to confirm. Pro turns on by itself as soon as Google Play confirms the payment; you don't need to buy again.
What happens when Pro ends
The Pro recipes and .cube export lock again and batches go back to 5 photos. Every recipe you already saved stays in Mine, and you can still open, edit, apply and share it; adding more than five needs Pro. Photos you already made are yours.
Your data
Your photos never leave your phone, and there is no account. Your recipes, settings and imported .cube files are stored in the app's private storage. The full details are in the privacy policy.
- Usage and crash reports: anonymous counts of which screens and features are used, and crash reports, sent to Google's Firebase. They never include your photos or your recipes. Switch them off in Settings → Send usage and crash reports.
- Keeping your recipes: uninstalling the app or clearing its storage deletes them. To keep one safe, Copy or Share it as text or a link to yourself; pasting it back restores it exactly.
- Deleting your data: switch off the reports, then uninstall the app or clear its storage. To have reports already sent deleted too, email us with the subject "Film Recipes data deletion"; see Retention and deletion.
Sample photos and credits
The eight sample photos are winners of Wiki Loves Earth, the nature photo contest on Wikimedia Commons, used under Creative Commons licences (CC BY-SA 4.0, and CC BY 4.0 for one). Each author and licence is listed in the app under Settings → About → Photo credits; tap a photo there to open its page on Wikimedia Commons. To use your own photo instead, tap Pick a photo in the library or Settings → Preview photo.
Troubleshooting
A recipe link opens in the browser, not the app
Tap Open in Film Recipes on the page. To make links open in the app every time: Android Settings → Apps → Film Recipes → Open by default, turn on Open supported links and make sure filmode-recipes.web.app is ticked. Some chat apps open links in their own browser; use Open in browser there first, or copy the link and paste it into the app.
"The QR scanner isn't available right now"
The scanner is part of Google Play services, which downloads it the first time it's needed. Check your connection, update Google Play services from Google Play, and try again. Meanwhile, ask for the recipe as a link or text and paste it.
I can't find the photos I made
Open your gallery app and look for the Film Recipes album, or Pictures / Film Recipes in a file manager. After a batch, Open photo shows the last one saved.
A .cube file won't import
The file must end in .cube and hold a 3D LUT. Files that are only 1D curves, or that are cut short, can't be read. If a file works elsewhere but not here, email it to us and we'll take a look.
The prices don't load
Prices come from Google Play. Check that you're online and signed in to Google Play, then tap to try again. On phones without Google Play, purchases aren't available; everything free still works.
